Job Description
This role will operate as project team lead and serve as a senior subject matter expert in grant writing/research development and will collaborate with other offices/roles across the University to ensure the integrity of grant proposal development is consistent.The Research Development Specialist will have grant proposal development experience with advanced scientific and technical writing skills, project management expertise, and group facilitation abilities that will enhance leading for large, collaborative research proposal development initiatives. Evidence of masterful technical/scientific writing ability, as demonstrated by writing samples is preferred.Essential Duties1. Leads the identification and evaluation of potential funding sources for the development of large grants (>$1M). 2. Assists researchers/principal investigators in interpreting grant solicitations, evaluating appropriateness of projects for opportunities, identifying necessary proposal components, developing project timelines, and managing the proposal preparation from concept to submission, ensuring that internal and external deadlines are met. 3. Initiates and manages program communications and collaboration among team members and provides document management support, ensuring that team members have access to up-to-date materials. 4. In collaboration with researchers/principal investigators, develops, write and provides comprehensive editorial review of research proposals including drafting non-scientific/scholarly sections as well as providing significant input into the content, organization, wording, and tone of the full document; may provide assistance with formatting and editing of figures and other graphical elements. 5. Catalyzes the development of proposals for strategically important large grant mechanisms (> $1M per year), monitoring opportunities and timelines, working with leadership, schools and RD colleagues to identify and encourage potential PIs, and support the development of competitive teams in advance of submission dates. 6. Maintains and implements a calendar of potential funding activities and monitors/tracks opportunities and timelines 7. Collaborates with other proposal development staff, department/college fiscal and administrative staff, and staff in Sponsored Programs Services. 8. May perform other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities + Skills
Education
Significant academic or work experience in life sciences, medical sciences, physical sciences, or engineering fields. Advanced knowledge of the guidelines and requirements of federal sponsors.
Experience
Demonstrated experience designing and delivering trainings/workshops, particularly on topics related to grant seeking. Advanced expertise in proposal development best practices.
